Cleaners on the Kāpiti Coast: A Guide to Sand, Salt and Sunshine

Beach sand in the carpet, salt on the glass and bach changeovers: a practical cleaning guide for homes from Paekākāriki to Ōtaki, with a problem-and-fix table.

Glass door being cleaned streak-free

Quick answer

Cleaners on the Kāpiti Coast deal with two problems you rarely see inland: beach sand ground into carpets and salt film on windows. Door mats and slow vacuuming keep the sand down, and deep extraction cleaning lifts what's packed in. Sea-facing glass usually needs a proper clean every three to four months, and baches need changeover cleans between guests.

Why do Kāpiti Coast homes need a different cleaning routine?

Because the beach keeps coming inside. Onshore winds carry salt spray and fine sand off the Tasman Sea, and every trip to the beach brings more in on jandals and towels.

It's the same story from Paekākāriki to Ōtaki, though it's strongest within a street or two of the sand at Paraparaumu Beach, Raumati Beach, Raumati South and Waikanae Beach. The low afternoon sun adds a twist: it streams straight through west-facing glass and shows up every streak and salt spot.

Regular house cleaning in Paraparaumu or anywhere else on the coast keeps the kitchen and bathrooms under control. Sand and salt need a few extra habits on top.

How do you keep beach sand out of the carpet?

You won't keep all of it out, but you can stop most of it at the door and lift the rest before it wears the carpet down.

Sand is hard on carpet. The grains work down into the pile and grind against the fibres every time someone walks over them, which is why the patch just inside a ranch slider goes dull and flat first.

  1. Use two mats at every outside door: a coarse one outside to knock off grit and an absorbent one inside.
  2. Keep a bucket of water, or an outdoor tap and an old towel, by the back steps for sandy feet.
  3. Shake towels and beach bags out on the deck before they come inside.
  4. Vacuum slowly, with overlapping passes, two or three times a week over summer. Quick passes leave the heavier grains behind.

On timber or vinyl floors, vacuum or sweep before you mop, because a wet mop drags sand across the surface and can scratch it.

Fine sand still works its way down towards the backing. A deep extraction carpet clean lifts much of that embedded grit, and pre-treatment of high-traffic areas helps the dull lanes by the doors. Rugs and stairs can be done at the same visit, and most carpets dry in 2 to 6 hours.

If you're weighing up methods, our guide to steam vs dry carpet cleaning compares the options.

How often should windows be cleaned on the Kāpiti Coast?

As a rule of thumb, sea-facing glass needs a proper clean every three to four months. Windows further back from the beach can usually stretch closer to six.

Salt spray dries into a thin film, and rain tends to leave it spotty rather than clean. Salt also draws moisture out of the air, so salty glass can look smeary on a damp morning.

Ranch sliders take the worst of it. Sand packs into the tracks until the door grinds, and salt crusts along the bottom runner. Vacuum the tracks with a crevice tool every week or two in summer, then wipe them with a damp cloth.

Our window cleaning covers interior and exterior glass where it's safe to reach, plus frames, sills, tracks and glass doors, with two-storey exteriors assessed on site. For more on salt and rain marks, read our guide to streak-free windows in Wellington wind, rain and salt spray.

What does a holiday home or bach changeover clean involve?

Holiday home cleaning on the Kāpiti Coast mostly means changeovers: a reset between guests, so the next arrivals walk into a clean kitchen and bathroom and floors with no sand on them.

Apex offers holiday-home and bach changeover cleans on the Kāpiti Coast, plus one-off deep cleans to open a place up for the season. Spring is the time to book that first one, before the summer holidays. A good changeover covers:

  • Bathrooms fully cleaned, including sand rinsed out of the shower tray.
  • Kitchen benches, stovetop, sink and splashback wiped down, and bins emptied.
  • Floors vacuumed and mopped, with extra attention along skirting boards and under rugs, where sand collects.
  • Mirrors and internal glass polished, and slider tracks vacuumed.
  • Add-ons when needed: oven cleaning, a fridge clean-out after long stays, or upholstery cleaning where sunscreen has marked the couch.

If you allow dogs, a carpet clean with odour neutralising between longer stays keeps the place fresh for the next guests.

Two practical points. Apex works Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm, so a Sunday check-out means a Monday clean at the earliest. And because we cover the coast on regular runs from our Naenae base, booking ahead (ideally with your guest dates for the season) makes it far easier to line each clean up with a check-out.

What causes common coastal cleaning problems, and how do you fix them?

Most of them trace back to wind-blown sand and salt spray. Dust is the quieter one: on breezy days with the windows open, fine sand settles on sills and blinds, and a damp cloth picks it up better than a dry duster.

Frequently asked questions

Do you clean holiday homes and baches on the Kāpiti Coast?

Yes. Apex offers holiday-home and bach changeover cleans on the Kāpiti Coast, plus one-off deep cleans to open a bach up for summer. Cleans run Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm, on our regular coast runs, so send your guest dates early and we'll give you a free, fixed quote.

How often should windows be cleaned at a beach house?

As a rule of thumb, sea-facing glass on the Kāpiti Coast needs a professional clean every three to four months, because salt spray dulls it quickly. Windows further from the beach can usually go closer to six months. Between cleans, rinse salty glass with fresh water and squeegee it dry.

Can carpet cleaning get beach sand out of carpets?

It lifts much of it. Slow, regular vacuuming removes loose sand, and deep extraction cleaning pulls out more of the fine grit packed down in the pile that vacuums leave behind. Pre-treatment of high-traffic areas helps the dull lanes by outside doors, and most carpets dry in 2 to 6 hours.

Which Kāpiti Coast towns does Apex cover?

Apex covers Paraparaumu, Paraparaumu Beach, Raumati, Waikanae, Paekākāriki and Ōtaki. The team is based in Naenae, Lower Hutt, and the Kāpiti Coast is part of our regular run, so booking ahead helps us fit your clean onto a coast day. Every quote is free and fixed before work starts.
